In The Not So Distant Future, Glow-In-The-Dark Trees Could Replace Street Lights

Is that… is that even healthy?

There are sea organisms and fungi which glow in the dark and there’s fireflies and jellyfish which glow in the dark. It doesn’t do them any harm nor does it do the people around them any harm. I would say its pretty healthy, as well as it would mean more photosynthesis happening in cities which mean cleaner air.

I was just curious about how they were doing it and for some reason I didn’t think to click the link. But thanks! It makes more sense now. I was afraid it was some kind of chemical thing.

nah just genetic modification using existing bioluminescent genes. Genetics is really cool, and so is bioluminescence. I mean they’ve already made pigs glow using jellyfish genes and pigs are waaay more complicated than trees iirc. So they’re actually (i think) less likely to muck it up with trees.

In which case

GLOWY

FORESTS

GLOWY

TREES

GLOWY

EVERYTHING

(I like glowy things)

means more trees which is good

uses less electricity which is good (for both tax reasons and also just because  reasons)

pretties everything up

just generally all good stuff

glowy trees 2k15 plz

i love this way more than is healthy for me

like i’m sort of jittering in place with excitement and am going to wear myself out long before the science actually happens

Hayv Kahraman

The Saatchi Gallery

Hayv Kahraman is an Iraqi artist and painter. Her works reflect the controversial issues of gender, honor killings and war, all issues that plague her home country of Iraq. Hayv currently lives and works in San Francisco

Hayv Kahraman is an artist from Iraq. Spanning drawing, painting, and sculpture, her practice engages with very difficult issues surrounding female identity in her homeland – how women are victimised within their own culture, made subservient to men and often suffer the most from the effects of the war. Kahraman tells these tales of horror with a demure grace through her stunningly beautiful paintings. In this series of work, her images depict the scriptural story of the Sacrifice of The Lamb, which is central to the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha, recasting the figures as women.

Girls face so many challenges and people are constantly telling them they can’t do things, they can’t be funny, they can’t run the companies. My advice is just not to focus on anyone telling you that you can’t do anything or the politics of your situation. Just think about your art, or that thing you want to do.

Illustrations by Brittany Schall

on Behance

Brittany Schall deals in her work ‘Hair Studies’ with identity, form, and experimenting with new mediums. In her portraits she forgoes the presentation of the models faces almost entirely, only concentraiting on the models hair. The visually reduced portraits ask the audience to discuss the essence of the person portrayed, despite the missing key elements, as a face for example. Metaphorically, her works talks about contradictory roles that we have within ourselves, particularly with women. Femininity is both strong and soft. Sensuality can empower or subjugate, and ‘vulnerability can be courageous or cowardly’. She creates images that are constantly having an internal dialogue about conflicting thoughts and ideas. Schall about her own work: ‘My pieces also express the dynamics of relationships, specifically submitting yourself with another while still trying to maintain your own sense of self’.
